In May 1940, the British Army faced one of the darkest moments in its history. As German forces swept rapidly through Belgium and Northern France, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was pushed into a fighting retreat towards the Channel coast.
The 1st Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers were among the units ordered to hold the line against overwhelming enemy forces, fully aware that withdrawal was unlikely.
Their task was stark but vital: Delay the German advance long enough to allow tens of thousands of Allied troops to escape via Dunkirk.
